While Ridding Solo Rants (Misspelled and pronounced Riding Solo Rants), a CFL podcast that gave birth to a wonderful network, is officially off air, Excalibur King Productions is proud to present Touchdown Talks Canada, a brand-new Canadian Football, and CFL podcast/blog. This is the first ever official blog entry for the podcast and blog. I (Big Al), am your host of the revamped podcast and blog am going to go all in and give you all the best CFL related content. Touchdown Talks Canada is a great way to stay updated on your favourite CFL news. I will be providing my audience with awesome content including excellent discussion involving opinions on topics to do with CFL related news. While Ridding (pronounced Riding) Solo Rants or RSR was a great show, such show had to come down completely, as that was what is best for the new podcast network. The CFL updates and opinions on such, will now be provided in the form of a revamped version of RSR, otherwise known as Touchdown Talks Canada. With all that being said here is the first ever blog done by Big Al. :
The first thing I want to discuss and analyze in this blog is the article by the popular magazine and website for Canadian Football League related content, known as 3DownNation, written by the 3DownStaff, titled “Bombers’ QB Zach Collaros: CFL could follow NCAA length season which results in ‘proper championship.’” (3 Down Nation, 2020.) Following that I will touch on the concept of how the new pandemic (COVID 19 or Corona Virus,) is going to impact our league (the CFL).
Firstly, according too 3DownNation, Zach Collaros told the Winnipeg Sun “We play a lot of games as it is. College plays what, 11 or 12 games. And that’s a proper championship when you win down there.” (Collaros. Zach, 2020.) Collaros knows this, because he did play in the National Collegiate Athletics Association otherwise known as NCAA, in division 1 football. As according too 3DownNation, “Collaros accomplished a four-season college career with the University of Cincinnati.” (3DownNation, 2020.) I personally would not like the decision to shorten the length of the season. I think that more games would mean more money for the league itself, a 12-game season is too short. A shorter season doesn’t give teams enough time to try to fight there way into the playoffs, which is one of the most entertaining parts of this great league we have up north. However, according to 3DownNation, Collaros did continue on to say to the Winnipeg sun that, “The bottom line is guys want to play.” (Collaros. Zach, 2020.) I assume here Colloras is referring to the COVID 19 crisis, and how such pandemic will affect how long the season will be, thus arguing the CFL could do a shorter season. This makes sense for the up and coming 2020 regular season. However, I would argue, that fans do not want this idea to be a permanent decision. This leads into my second discussion.
Therefore, second of all, the COVID 19 crisis otherwise known as the Coronavirus pandemic, has already played a huge factor in how much professional sports leagues such as the NHL and NBA for example, will conduct regular season play. Many leagues like such at first postponed contest but now such leagues such as the NHL and NBA and others have fully canceled the 2019-2020 seasons. The CFL has already canceled the leagues national draft combine and postponed the leagues training camps thus far. Today, as I am writing this on Monday, March 30, 2020, TSN (The Sports Network), (which is CFL’s main broadcasting partner,) recently released an article titled “CFL Postpones Training camps Indefinitely”, that the CFL will change the dates of when both the rookie mini camps and training camps overall, pushing the dates of the opening to such training camps back further. (Naylor. Dave, 2020) I personally agree with this decision brought forward by the league, although it worries me as a die-hard fan of the CFL if the league’s regular-season will start on time or if at all! I am certain however whatever decision the CFL makes, that such decision will be what is best for players, staff and fans, health, well being and safety.
In conclusion, this pandemic is not something to take lightly, and many precautions have and need to be set in place. If that means life without sports, including the CFL, then that is for the best.
