CFL: TOP 5 QUARTERBACKS

The only Canadian Football discussion that really gets implemented in April every year, is to do with the draft. Now with everything going on in terms of the Corona Virus, we Canadian Football fans seem to be more so focused on a potential full regular CFL season being canceled. Both the draft and postponing the CFL regular 2020 season, have been taking up every Canadian Football fans news feed. Which is why for this blog entry I am going to change things up. I am going to discus the top 5 greatest CFL quarterbacks of all time. I will order the QBs from bottom of the top 5 to the number 1 spot on the list. Here is that list...

5.

Warren Moon. Moon may be number five, but he is probably the most deserving to be on this list. Putting him on this list stirred 0 debate with my inner self. Putting him as low as number 5 however may be questionable to some of you! Before I explain why he is as low as number 5, allow me to explain why he made the list, for those of you that are a CFL noob and or live under a rock… Warren Moon is most famous to CFL fans for winning 5 grey cups, back to back, to back and so on… Moon was a phenomenal Quarterback, no doubt about that! Moon threw for 21,228 yards in just 6 years of being in the CFL before he joined forces in the NFL. So why is he at the bottom of the top 5 list? Due to the fact that he was on a strong and successful team in Edmonton. Now that doesn’t mean Moon didn’t make Edmonton more successful, because without Moon I doubt Edmonton would have won 5 Grey Cups in a row, but Edmonton at the time would have been still successful without Moon.

4.

Russ Jackson. Well how could I do a list on the greatest CFL quarterbacks without including a Canadian themselves? Russ Jackson who played in his university days for McMaster in Hamilton Ontario, was a legendary Canadian quarterback for the Ottawa Rough Riders in the CFL, in the 1960s. He may have only won three Grey Cups, but Jackson still led Ottawa to the playoffs all 12 seasons he played for Ottawa and been to the final 4 times. Jackson was amazing and he threw for 24,592 yards by the end of his career. Jackson wad inducted into the Canadian Football Hall Fame in the year 1973 for his outstanding performance during his time as a player. It might seem controversial to have Jackson a head of Moon on this list to some, but one thing you can’t deny is both are legendary quarterbacks and ether decision is tough one to make, I just think Moon was put in a better situation to succeed compared to Russ Jackson and others on this list.

3.

Anthony Calvillo. This might come to a surprise to those that started watching Canadian Football in the early 2000s, that Anthony Calvillo is only number 3 and not a higher rank. I tell you though you have right to feel that way. Calvillo is an amazing QB. He is more so famous for having the most 400 yard passing games in a row, in pro football history. ( That means both CFL and NFL records were broke.) Calvillo in 20 seasons in the CFL has nearly 80 thousand passing yards total. Calvillo has also competed in 8 Grey Cups. He is a true GOAT!

2.

Damon Allen. WOAH! Now hold up! Why is he number 2 and passed Calvillo? I know right!? But there was time this dude was the all-time passing leader in the CFL with over 72,000 yards thrown. One-time Allen throw for 23 completions out of 24 attempts in a GREY CUP game. Now maybe I should not have put him on my number 2 but I wanted to be clear that Calvillo was not alone in Calvillo’s era. That much will be said. Besides how many times can someone this great, get there first start in a Grey Cup game, mid way through!?

1.

Doug Flutie. Flutie has still today the most passing touchdowns in a single, season with 48. During his 8 seasons in the CFL and before he transitioned to the NFL, Doug Flutie throw for 41,355 yards, and 270 touchdowns. To come across stats like these in just 8 seasons is unheard of! Incredible. No wonder in 2006 he was voted CFL player of all time. I to this day rank him number 1 Quarterback in the CFL.

There you have my top five quarterbacks of all time, it might spark some debate, and even drive people nuts. But hey, one thing is for sure these guys whether its some or all, or even just one, should be in everyone's top 5!
